ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Panthers by a final score of 73-72 to fall to 12-2 on the season and 2-1 in conference play. With the win, the Panthers improve to 10-4 on the season and 3-0 in the SLIAC.
The Gorloks went 29-for-68 (42.6%) from the floor and 3-for-12 (25.0%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Panthers by a final count of 44-38 and pulled down 17 rebounds on the offensive side of the floor. They forced the Panthers to turn the ball over 19 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 16 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out nine assists.
Webster came out in the first quarter of the game and jumped out to a 13-6 lead in the first four minutes of the contest. The Panthers cut the lead to one with two minutes to play in the quarter, but the Gorloks would take a 22-20 lead into the second. The Panthers started the second on an 8-2 run to take a 28-24 lead, but the Gorloks would answer with a 6-2 run of their own to tie the score at 30. The Gorloks would continue to play well down the final stretch of the half and took a 42-37 lead into the locker room.
Webster came out of the locker room and quickly extended their lead to seven. The Panthers battled back and tied the score at 52 midway through the quarter, but an 11-5 run to end the frame put the Gorloks up 63-57 heading into the fourth. They extended their lead to as many as eight in the first minute of the period, but a 10-3 run from the Panthers would cut the lead to one late in the contest. Webster would extend their lead back out to five, but another run from the Panthers would tie the score at 72 in the final minute. Greenville would take the lead on a free throw with 22 seconds to play and held off the Gorloks on their final possession to solidify the win.
Bethany Lancaster led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 19 points and a career high 14 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season.
Julie Baudendistel also had a nice game as she finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. In addition,
Nysa Gilchrist added 10 points,
Jordyn Grimes finished with nine points, and
Emily Wilson pulled down six rebounds.
With 14 points tonight,
Julie Baudendistel has surpassed the 1,000 career point mark. She has appeared in 80 games throughout her career at Webster and is just the ninth player in program history to score over 1,000 points.
The Gorloks are back in action on Saturday, January 14
th when they travel to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m.
