Gorloks Improve to 3-1 in SLIAC Play

FULTON, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays in a rematch of last years SLIAC Tournament Final. The Gorloks defeated the Blue Jays by a final score of 80-66 to improve to 13-2 on the season and 3-1 in SLIAC play. With the loss, Westminster falls to 8-7 on the season and 2-2 in the conference.

Webster went 36-for-65 (55.4%) from the floor and 3-for-11 (27.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebouned by the Blue Jays by a final count of 42-25 and pulled down 10 offensive boards. Webster forced Westminster to turn the ball over 32 times and turned those turnovers into 35 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks scored 56 of their 80 points in the paint and dished out 20 assists.

The Gorloks got off to a great start in this one as they went on an 11-4 run to open the game and take an early lead. The Blue Jays settled in as the quarter progressed and cut the lead to three, but a 6-0 run from Webster to end the period put the Gorloks up 26-17 heading into the second. They continued to play well in the second and held a 14 point advantage midway through the quarter. Webster would push their lead to as many at 16 in the half and would take a 47-36 lead into the locker room.

The Gorloks came out of the locker room and extended their lead to 14 on their first possession of the half. The Blue Jays would cut the lead down to single digits over the next few minutes, but Webster would extend their lead back out to 13 before taking a 66-55 lead into the fourth. The Blue Jays opened the fourth on a 7-2 run to come within six, but a 12-4 run from Webster to end the game would solidify their 13th win of the year.

Julie Baudendistel led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a game high 19 points. Emily Wilson also played well as she scored 18 points and pulled down a team high six rebounds. In addition, Nysa Gilchrist finished with 10 points and Trinniti Matthews added eight points while both Kate Rolfes and Jordyn Grimes dished out four assists.

The Gorloks return to the court on Wednesday, January 18th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
