ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled across town to take on the Harris-Stowe State (Mo.) University Hornets for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Hornets by a final score of 66-45 to improve to 9-8 on the season. With the loss, the Hornets drop to 5-11 on the year.
Webster went 28-for-67 (41.8%) from the floor and 6-for-26 (23.1%) from behind the arc. They outrebouned the Hornets by a final count of 40-34 and pulled down 12 offensive boards. Webster forced Harris-Stowe to turn the ball over 11 times and turned those turnovers into eight points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks scored 30 of their 66 points in the paint and dished out 13 assists.
In the first half of the game, both sides came out and exchanged baskets early. With the score tied at nine, Webster went on a 9-2 run to take an 18-11 lead midway through the half. The Hornets answered with a 9-2 run of their own to tie the score at 20, but a 10-4 run from the Gorloks to end the half put them up 30-24 at the break.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second half and started the period on a 11-4 run to push their lead to 13 with 15 minutes to play. The Hornets had a tough time finding the bottom of the basket as the half progressed and the Gorloks were able to extend their lead to 21 with eight minutes remaining in the contest. They grew their lead to as many as 26 in the game and cruised to their ninth straight win.\
Jason Coleman was the leading scorer for the Gorloks as he finished with a team high 14 points in the contest. In addition,
Wynne Brown Jr.,
Jemard Sykes II, and
Karl Moore Jr. all finished in double figures as Brown Jr. finished with 12 points, Sykes II added 11 points, and Moore Jr. finished with 10 points. Moore Jr. also pulled down a team high eight rebounds while
Javane Nugent grabbed seven.
The Gorloks return to the court on Wednesday, January 25
th when they travel to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
