CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers in a rematch of last years SLIAC Men's Basketball Tournament Final. The Gorloks defeated the Beavers by a final score of 70-59 to improve to 10-8 on the season and 7-0 in conference play. With the loss, the Beavers fall to 6-12 on the year and 2-5 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 25-for-53 (47.2%) from the floor and 9-for-21 (42.9%) from behind the arc. They outrebouned the Beavers by a final count of 36-35 with nine rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced Blackburn to turn the ball over 13 times and turned those turnovers into 22 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks scored 32 of their 70 points in the paint and dished out 20 assists.
The Gorloks came out in the first half and found themselves trailing 10-2 through the first four minutes of the game. Webster battled back and went on a 12-0 run midway through the half to give themselves a 22-17 advantage with 9:32 left to play in the period. The Beavers would retake the lead with just under six minutes remaining in the frame, but a 10-4 run from the Gorloks down the final stretch would give them a 35-30 lead at the break.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second half and extended their lead to seven in the first three minutes of the period. The Beavers would answer with a 13-4 run to take their first lead of the half, but a 23-6 run from Webster over the next few minutes put them up 66-51 late in the contest. The Beavers tried to get back into the game in the final minutes, but the Gorloks closed them out down the stretch to solidify their 10
th straight win.
Wynne Brown Jr. was the leading scorer for the Gorloks as he finished with a team high 13 points.
Jason Coleman and
Stephen Hawkins rounded out the top scorers for Webster as they both added nine points. Coleman also dished out a team high five assists.
Karl Moore Jr. led the team in rebounding as he pulled down a game high 11 boards while blocking five shots.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, January 28
th when they host the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 3:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
