ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for their annual Coaches vs. Cancer Game. The Gorloks were defeated by the Golden Eagles by a final score of 56-53 to fall to 10-9 on the season and 7-1 in the SLIAC. With the win, the Golden Eagles improve to 4-14 on the season and 3-5 in conference play.
Webster went 23-for-59 (39.0%) from the floor and 2-for-14 (14.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebouned by the Golden Eagles by a final count of 47-34 with 16 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced Spalding to turn the ball over 15 times and turned those turnovers into 12 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks scored 32 of their 53 points in the paint and dished out 13 assists.
In the first half of the game, both sides came out and exchanged baskets early. With the score tied at 11, The Golden Eagles went on a 9-4 run to give themselves a 20-15 lead with seven minutes to play in the half. Webster cut the lead down to three, but a 14-6 run from the Golden Eagles to end the half gave them a 34-23 advantage at the break.
The Gorloks picked it up to start the second half and went on an 11-2 run in the first four minutes of the frame to cut Spalding's lead to two. The game remained close over the next few minutes, but a 6-2 run from the Golden Eagles gave them a 48-40 lead midway through the half. Webster would claw their way back and tie the score at 51, but a 5-2 run from Spalding to end the game solidified the win.
Wynne Brown Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a game high 17 points and a game high four steals.
Karl Moore Jr. also had a great game as he finished with 16 points, a team high 13 rebounds, and a game high five blocks for his sixth double-double of the season.
The Gorloks return to the court on Wednesday, February 1
st when they travel to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
