Gorloks Fall on the Road at Greenville

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Panthers by a final score of 86-84 to fall to 10-10 on the season and 7-2 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the win, the Panthers improve to 5-15 on the year and 4-5 in conference play.

Webster went 36-for-65 (55.4%) from the floor and 3-for-10 (30.0%) from behind the arc. The Gorloks outrebounded the Panthers by a final count of 53-34 and pulled down 17 boards on the offensive end. Webster forced Greenville to turn the ball over 15 times and turned those turnovers into 15 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks scored 62 of their 84 points in the paint and dished out 10 assists.

The Gorloks came out in the first half and jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Panthers settled in as the game progressed and answered with an 11-0 run to take a 19-17 advantage midway through the period. The game would remain close over the next few minutes, but the Gorloks would hold a four-point advantage with just under two minutes to play in the half. The Panthers would hit a three on their final possession of the half and Webster would take a 39-38 lead into the locker room.

The Panthers would open up the second half with two straight three pointers to take a five point lead early in the frame. Webster would retake the lead with 17:30 to play in the game, but a 14-5 run over the next few minutes would give Greenville a 61-53 advantage five minutes into the period. The Gorloks would battle back and cut the lead to one with just over five minutes to play, but another quick run for the Panthers would extend their lead back to four late in the contest. Webster would tie the score at 80, but the Panthers would outscore the Gorloks 6-4 down the final stretch to solidify the win.

Wynne Brown Jr. led the way for Webster offensively as he finished with a team high 18 points. Jason Coleman, Karl Moore Jr., and Jemard Sykes II also finished in double figures as Coleman scored 15 points, Moore Jr. scored 12 points, and Sykes II finished with 11 points. Javane Nugent and Josh Luster led the way on the boards as Nugent pulled down a game high 12 rebounds while Luster grabbed 10 rebounds.

The Gorloks will be back in action on Saturday, February 4th when they travel across town to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
