ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Fontbonne (Mo.) University to take on the Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Griffins by a final score of 81-69 to fall to 10-11 on the season and 7-3 in SLIAC play. With the win, the Griffins improve to 11-10 on the year and 7-3 in the conference.
The Gorloks went 22-for-59 (37.3%) from the floor and 10-for-28 (35.7%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Griffins by a final count of 39-28 and pulled down 11 boards on the offensive end. They forced Fontbonne to turn the ball over 10 times and turned those turnovers into 12 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks also dished out eight assists.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the first four minutes. The Gorloks had a tough time finding the bottom of the basket as the half progressed and the Griffins would go on a 13-0 run to take an 18-11 lead midway through the period. Webster would battle back and tie the score at 22, but a 16-6 run from the Griffins to end the half would put them up 38-28 at the break.
The Griffins would carry over the momentum into the second half and would extend their lead to 16 with 16 minutes to play. Webster picked it up over the next few minutes and would go on a 12-2 run to cut the Griffins lead to 51-45 with 13 minutes remaining. Fontbonne would respond with a run of their own to extend their lead back out to 15 and held off the Gorloks down the stretch to solidify the win.
Jason Coleman and
Wynne Brown Jr. were the leading scorers for the Gorloks as they both finished with a team high 18 points.
Jemard Sykes II also finished in double figures as he had 13. In addition,
Karl Moore Jr. finished with nine points, a team high eight rebounds, and five blocks.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, February 4
th when they host the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
