ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Red Devils by a final score of 75-67 to fall to 10-12 on the season and 7-4 in SLIAC play. With the win, the Red Devils improve to 8-14 on the year and 6-5 in the conference.
The Gorloks went 29-for-79 (36.7%) from the floor and 3-for-17 (17.6%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Red Devils by a final count of 48-38 and pulled down 21 rebounds on the offensive end. They forced the Red Devils to turn the ball over eight times in the contest while turning those turnovers into six points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks dished out 10 assists and scored 36 of their 67 points in the paint.
The Gorloks came out in the first half of the game and found themselves trailing 11-7 after the first four minutes of action. They kept it close as the half progressed but a 9-2 run from Eureka over the next few minutes would give them a 28-19 lead with six minutes to play in the period. Webster would cut the lead back down to five, but another quick run from the Red Devils to end the half would give them a 38-27 lead at the break.
Eureka came out in the second half and went on an 18-11 run to extend their lead to 18 midway through the period. Webster would claw their way back into the game and were able to cut the deficit to six in the final minute of action. The Gorloks tried their best to make a run in the final minute but the Red Devils were able to close them out to solidify the win.
Jason Coleman led the way for the Gorloks as he finished with a team high 20 points to go along with seven rebounds.
Jemard Sykes II also had a great game as he scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. In addition,
Karl Moore Jr. finished with nine points and a team high 11 rebounds while
Javane Nugent grabbed nine rebounds.
The Gorloks return to the court on Saturday, February 11th when they travel to Elsah, Illinois, to take on the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
