Elsah, Ill. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Elsah, Illinois, to take on the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Panthers by a final score of 79-59 to improve to 11-12 on the season and 8-4 in the SLIAC. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 17-6 on the year and 9-3 in the conference.
The Gorloks went 31-for-61 (50.8%) from the floor and 11-for-23 (47.8%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Panthers by a final count of 50-28 and pulled down 15 rebounds on the offensive end. They scored 26 of their 79 points in the paint and dished out 17 assists.
The Gorloks came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to a 18-11 lead in the first eight minutes of the contest. The Panther quickly cut the lead back down to three, but a 13-3 run from Webster over the next few minutes would give then a 33-20 advantage with just over three minutes to play in the half. Principia cut the lead back down to single digits, but another run from Webster to end the half would put them up 40-26 at the break.
Webster carried over their momentum into the second half and would push their lead to 20 in the first six minutes of the period. Principia answered with an 11-0 run to cut the lead to single digits, but a 20-2 run from the Gorloks would extend their lead back out to 25 late in the contest. They held off the Panthers down the final stretch of the game and cruised to their 11
th win of the year.
Wynne Brown Jr. led the way for Webster as he finished with a game high 21 points.
Jemard Sykes II and
Jason Coleman also finished in double figures as Sykes II scored 14 points while Coleman added 12.
Karl Moore Jr. led the team on the boards as he pulled down a game high 12 rebounds to go along with nine points and a game high six blocks.
Javane Nugent also finished with nine points and 10 rebounds to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
The Gorloks will return home on Wednesday, February 15
th when they host the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
