ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for their annual Coaches vs. Cancer Game. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 79-60 to improve to 17-2 on the season and 7-1 in the SLIAC. With the loss, the Golden Eagles fall to 4-15 on the season and 1-7 in conference play.
Webster went 32-for-68 (47.1%) from the floor and 6-for-13 (46.2%) from behind the arc. They were outrebouned by the Golden Eagles by a final count of 42-38 with 14 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced Spalding to turn the ball over 29 times and turned those turnovers into 39 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks scored 46 of their 79 points in the paint and dished out 19 assists.
The Gorloks came out in the first quarter and jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first three minutes of the game. The Golden Eagles cut the lead to four, but a 22-9 run from Webster to end the quarter put them up 36-19 heading into the second. The Gorloks continued to play well in the second and pushed their lead to 21 midway through the frame. They extended their lead to as many as 24 in the period and would take a 36-37 advantage into the locker room.
In the second half, both sides came out and exchanged baskets early. Webster picked it up as the quarter progressed and went on an 11-4 run down the final stretch of the period to take a 71-45 lead into the fourth. Spalding would cut the Gorloks lead down to 19 in the fourth, but Webster would close them out down the stretch to solidify their fifth straight win.
Kate Rolfes led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a season high 17 points in the contest.
Bethany Lancaster and
Emily Wilson also finished in double figures as they both added 12 points. Wilson also pulled down a team high six rebounds while
Kate Rolfes and
Julie Baudendistel each finished with five.
The Gorloks return to the court on Wednesday, February 1
st when they travel to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
