ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins by a final score of 64-62 to improve to 4-8 on the season and 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, Fontbonne falls to 5-8 on the year and 1-1 in the conference.
Prior to the start of the game, Webster University honored head coach
Chris Bunch for winning his 300
th career game on Wednesday. Bunch is the all-time winningest head coach in Webster University men's basketball history and has led his teams to eight SLIAC Regular Season titles, three SLIAC Tournament titles, and three NCAA Division III National Tournament appearances.
The Gorloks went 22-for-60 (36.7%) from the floor and 7-for-19 (36.8%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Griffins by a final count of 38-35 and pulled down 18 rebounds on the offensive side of the floor. They forced the Griffins to turn the ball over 22 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 20 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 11 assists.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and found themselves trailing 8-2 early in the contest. They quickly tied the score at 10 midway through the half, but an 11-4 run from the Griffins would put them up 21-14 with just under nine minutes to play in the period. The Gorloks would cut the lead back down to one late in the half, but a 12-6 run from the Griffins to end the frame put them up 34-25 at the break.
The Griffins would carry over their momentum into the second half and started the period on a 12-4 run to push their lead to 46-29 with 14:25 left to play. Webster picked it up as the half progressed and answered with a 26-8 run of their own to take their first lead of the game with 5:21 remaining. The Griffins would answer with a three-pointer to retake the lead, but a 7-0 run over the next few minutes would give the Gorloks a 62-56 advantage late in the game. Webster would go on to make their free throws down the stretch and held off the Griffins to remain unbeaten in conference play.
Jemard Sykes II led the way for Webster as he finished with a career high 18 points to go along with six rebounds.
Wynne Brown Jr. also finished in double figures as he added 15 points. In addition,
Karl Moore Jr. finished with nine rebounds while
Alpha Diallo added seven points.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, January 11
th when they host the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
