ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins by a final score of 92-71 to improve to 12-1 on the season and 2-0 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. With the loss, Fontbonne falls to 4-8 on the year and 0-2 in the conference.
The Gorloks went 36-for-64 (56.3%) from the floor and 4-for-13 (30.8%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Griffins by a final count of 42-35 and pulled down nine rebounds on the offensive side of the floor. They forced the Griffins to turn the ball over 22 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 28 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out a season high 27 assists.
The Gorloks came out in the first quarter of the game and jumped out to an early 10-0 lead. The Griffins battled back and cut the lead to seven, but a 19-11 run from the Gorloks to end the frame put them up 33-15 heading into the second. Webster carried over their momentum into the second and started the period on an 11-3 run to extend their lead to 26. They pushed their lead to as many as 27 in the quarter and would take a 53-30 lead into the locker room.
Webster came out in the third quarter and started the period on a 14-1 run to extend their lead to 67-31 midway though the frame. The Griffins answered with a 19-2 run down the final stretch of the quarter, but the Gorloks would take a 69-50 lead into the fourth. Webster extended their lead back out to as many as 21 in the final frame and cruised to their ninth straight victory.
Bethany Lancaster led the way for Webster as she finished with a team high 23 points and 10 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season.
Julie Baudendistel also had a great game as she finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for her first double-double of the year. In addition,
Kate Rolfes finished with 15 points and a game high six assists while
Emily Wilson added 22 points and seven rebounds.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, January 11
th when they host the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
