Gorloks Open SLIAC Play with Road Win

FULTON, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Fulton, Missouri, to take on the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for their first SLIAC game of the season. The Gorloks defeated the Blue Jays by a final score of 70-48 to improve to 4-0 on the season. With the loss, Westminster drops to 2-3 on the year and 0-1 in the SLIAC.

Webster went 25-for-60 (41.7%) from the floor and 2-for-11 (18.2%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 44-34 with 12 rebounds coming on the offensive end. They forced the Blue Jays to turn the ball over 33 times and turned those turnovers into 35 points on the other end of the floor.

Webster came out in the first quarter and jumped out to an early 11-6 lead. The Blue Jays would cut the lead to three, but a 9-5 run from Webster to end the period put them up 20-13 heading into the second. The Gorloks had a tough time scoring the ball in the second quarter and the Blue Jays were able to cut the lead to four with just over five minutes to play in the half. They got the lead to as few as three but a 5-2 run from Webster in the final minute gave them a 31-25 lead at the break.

The Blue Jays came out in the second half and scored the first two baskets to cut the lead to two. The Gorloks responded with a 20-8 in the final eight minutes of the quarter and took a 51-37 lead into the final frame. Webster would push their lead to as many as 24 in the fourth and cruised to their fourth straight win to start the year.

Julie Baudendistel led the way offensively as she finished with a game high 17 points to go along with seven rebounds. Nysa Gilchrist also had a great game she finished with 10 points and a team high nine rebounds. In addition, Jordyn Grimes recorded 13 points and Emily Wilson finished with 10 points to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, November 25th when they host the Augustana (Ill.) College Vikings for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
