ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Augustana (Ill.) College Vikings for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Vikings by a final score of 56-45 to improve to 5-0 on the season. With the loss, Augustana drops to 2-3 on the year.
Webster went 24-for-60 (40.0%) from the floor and 1-for-9 (11.1%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 42-33 and had 11 boards on the offensive end. They forced the Vikings to turn the ball over 28 times in the game while turning those turnovers into 30 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 14 assists.
In the first quarter, both teams came out and had a tough time scoring the ball. With the Gorloks leading 7-2, Augustana went on a 7-1 run to take a one point lead in the game. Webster would regain the lead on their next possession and take a 15-12 lead into the second. The Gorloks came out in the second and pushed their lead to six in the first two minutes of the frame. The Vikings would cut the lead down to two in the final minute of the period, but Webster would score the last basket of the half to take a 28-24 lead into the locker room.
Webster turned up the pressure in the third and started the quarter on a 10-2 run to push their lead to 12. They would outscore the Vikings 20-5 in the quarter and would take a 48-29 lead into the fourth. The Gorloks continued to play well in the fourth and held off the Vikings down the stretch to capture their fifth straight win to start the season.
Bethany Lancaster led the way for Webster as she recorded a team high 11 points to go along with a game high 13 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.
Julie Baudendistel and
Emily Wilson also finished in double figures as they each recorded 10 points and five rebounds. In addition,
Nysa Gilchrist dished out a game high five assists while
Jordyn Grimes added seven points.
The Gorloks will return to the court tomorrow, November 26
th when they host the Central (Iowa) College Dutch for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
