ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled down Big Bend Road to take on the 13
th ranked Washington (Mo.) University Bears for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Bears by a final score of 88-59 to drop to 1-6 on the season. With the win, WashU improves to 6-1 on the year.
The Gorloks went 27-for-77 (35.1%) from the field and 4-for-10 (40.0) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 49-30 in the contest and pulled down 15 rebounds on the offensive end. The Gorloks forced 17 turnovers in the game and turned those turnovers into 17 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out nine assists.
Webster came out in the first half and found themselves trailing 17-9 in the first five minutes of the game. The Bears would push their lead to 15 over the next few minutes, but a run from the Gorloks would cut the lead to nine midway through the half. The Bears would end the half on a 18-2 run and take a 50-25 lead into the locker room.
The Bears would carry their momentum over into the second half and pushed their lead to 36 with just under 14 minutes to play. Webster would cut the lead back down to 24 but that was as close as they would get as the Bears held them off down the stretch to solidify the win.
Jemard Sykes II and
Justin Ugo led the way for Webster as Sykes finished with 12 points while Ugo finished with 12 points and a team high six rebounds.
Jalen Davis also played well as he finished with a career high 10 points.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, December 2
nd when they host the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
