Gorloks Notch First SLIAC Win of the Season

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Blue Jays by a final score of 79-55 to improve to 2-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. With the loss, Westminster drops to 1-6 on the year and 1-1 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks went 33-for-73 (45.2%) from the floor and 5-for-23 (21.7%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Blue Jays by a final count of 55-38 and pulled down 18 boards on the offensive end. They forced Westminster to turn the ball over 21 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 19 assists while blocking seven shots.

Webster came out in the first half and jumped out to a 15-11 lead in the first four minutes of the game. They continued to play well as the half progressed and grew their lead to as many as 10 with 7:30 left to play. The Blue Jays would cut the lead to five late in the period, but the Gorloks would score the final four points of the half to take a 36-27 lead into the locker room.

The Gorloks came out of the locker room and went on a 9-0 run to start the half to extend their lead to 18. The Blue Jays would cut the lead back down to 14 with just over eight minutes to play in the game, but a 6-0 run from Webster would extend their lead back out to 20 late in the contest. The Gorloks would push their lead to as many as 25 in the final minutes and cruised to their first SLIAC win of the season.

Nate Jones led the way for Webster as he finished with a career high 16 points to go along with eight rebounds and three blocks. Markus Becton and Justin Ugo also played well as Becton finished with 12 points and seven rebounds while Ugo added 11 points. In addition, Jemard Sykes II pulled down a game high 12 rebounds while Jason Coleman added nine points.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, December 6th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5 p.m.
