EUREKA, Ill. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Red Devils by a final score of 70-63 to fall to 2-6 on the year and 1-2 in conference play. With the win, Eureka moves to 3-4 on the year and 1-1 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 26-for-38 (38.2%) from the floor and 4-for-28 (14.3%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Red Devils by a final count of 47-42 and pulled down 17 boards on the offensive end. They forced the Red Devils to turn the ball over eight times in the game while blocking seven total shots.
The Gorloks came out in the first half and found themselves trailing 12-7 in the first six minutes of the game. They cut the lead to four over the next few minutes, but a 7-1 run from the Red Devils would put them up 10 midway through the half. The Gorloks would bounce back and cut the lead to back down to four late in the frame, but Eureka would extend their lead back to 11 before taking a 34-28 lead into the locker room.
Webster picked it up to start the second half and cut the lead to two in the first three minutes of the period. The Red Devils would answer with a 6-0 run to push their lead back out to eight, but a 9-2 run from Webster would cut the lead to one with 13 minutes to play in the game. The Gorloks would tie the score at 46 over the next few minutes, but an 11-2 run from the Red Devils would put them up nine midway through the half. Webster would cut the lead to four late in the game but that was as close as they would get as the Red Devils closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.
Markus Becton and
Jalen Davis led the way for Webster as they each recorded 13 points in the contest.
Jason Coleman also finished in double figures as he finished with 11 points. In addition,
Karl Moore Jr. pulled down a game high 13 rebounds while
Jemard Sykes II grabbed 11 rebounds.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, December 9
th when they travel to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
