ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Greenville, Illinois, to take on the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by the Panthers by a final score of 125-111 to fall to 2-7 on the season and 1-3 in SLIAC play. With the win, the Panthers improve to 6-4 on the year and 2-1 in conference play.
Webster went 46-for-78 (59.0%) from the floor and 0-for-5 (0.0%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Panthers by a final count of 48-46 with 13 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced Greenville to turn the ball over 20 times in the game while turning those turnovers into 24 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 22 assists.
The Gorloks came out in the first half and found themselves trailing 15-5 in the first four minutes of the game. They would cut the lead back down to single digits over the next few minutes, but another run from Greenville would put them up 35-9 midway through the half. Webster would bounce back and cut the lead to 14, but the Panthers would extend their lead back out to 23 late in the frame. The Gorloks would end the half on 14-4 run and the Panthers would take a 61-48 lead into the locker room.
The Panthers came out in the second half and pushed their lead back out to 23 with 15 minutes to play in the game. Webster would cut the lead to 12 in the final minutes but that was as close as they would get as the Panthers closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.
Jason Coleman led the way offensively for Webster as he finished with a game high 25 points to go along with seven rebounds and a team high six assists.
Karl Moore Jr. also played well as he finished with 18 points and a team high nine rebounds. In addition,
Jemard Sykes II recorded 16 points,
Markus Becton and
Nate Jones each had 11, and
Alpha Diallo finished with 14 to round out the top performers for Webster.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, December 16
th when they travel to Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin, to take on Crown (Minn.) College. The game is set to start at 6 p.m.
