Gorloks Drop Season Opener

JACKSONVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University men's basketball team tipped-off their season this evening when they traveled to Jacksonville, Illinois, to take on the Illinois College Blue Boys for a nonconference matchup. The Gorloks were defeated by Illinois College by a final score of 64-48 to fall to 0-1 on the season. With the win, Illinois College moves to 1-0.

The Gorloks went 20-for-67 (29.9) from the floor and 6-for-21 (28.6%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded 54-32 in the game and had 11 offensive boards. Webster also dished out seven assists while turning the ball over nine times. They forced Illinois College to turn the ball over 18 times and turned those turnovers into 11 points on the other end of the floor.

Webster came out in the first half of the game and found themselves trailing 8-1 early. The Blue Boys would extend their lead to as many as nine over the next few minutes, but a 7-0 run from Webster would cut the lead to two midway through the half. Illinois College would extend their lead back out to six with just under eight minutes to play in the period, but another run from Webster would put them down one late in the frame. The Blue Boys would end the half on a 6-2 run and take a 27-22 lead into the locker room.

Illinois College would carry over their momentum into the second half and quickly extend their lead to 11. Webster would cut the lead back down to six, but another run from Illinois College would put them up 37-27 with 15 minutes to play. The Gorloks hung around for most of the half, but the Blue Boys would extend their lead to 14 late in the game. They would close out the Gorloks down the stretch and solidify their first win of the season.

Jason Coleman and Allen Grahovic led the way offensively for Webster as they each recorded 10 points in the game. Jemard Sykes II and Karl Moore Jr. also played well as they each led the team with six rebounds. Sykes also recorded a team high four steals while Nate Jones added eight points.

Webster will return to action on Tuesday, November 14th when they travel down the highway to Maryville (Mo.) University to take on the Saints for an exhibition game. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m.
