MONMOUTH, Ill. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled to Monmouth, Illinois, to take on the Monmouth (Ill.) College Fighting Scots for their final nonconference game before the holiday break. The Gorloks defeated the Fighting Scots by a final score of 98-61 to improve to 10-0 on the season. With the loss, Monmouth drops to 1-9 on the season.
The Gorloks went 39-for-67 (58.2%) from the floor and 5-for-12 (41.7%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Fighting Scots by a final count of 30-24 with 14 rebounds coming on the offensive end. They forced Monmouth to turn the ball over 38 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 43 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 21 assists while racking up 24 steals.
Webster came out in the first quarter and jumped out to a 14-7 lead. Monmouth would cut the lead to four but the Gorloks would end the quarter on a 5-2 run to take a 19-12 lead into the second. Webster carried their momentum over into the second and were able to extend their lead to 10 in the first three minutes of the frame. They ended the half on a 19-8 run and would take a 44-23 lead into the locker room.
The Gorloks continued to play well in the third quarter and would push their lead to 29 midway through the frame. The Fighting Scots would battle back as the quarter progressed and ended the period on a 9-3 run to cut the lead to 68-45 heading into the fourth. Webster would outscore Monmouth 30-16 in the final quarter and cruised to their 10
th straight win to start the season.
Webster had 11 different players score in this one including
Emily Wilson who finished with a game high 21 points.
Kate Rolfes and
Julie Baudendistel also played well as Rolfes finished with 16 points and a game high eight steals while Baudendistel finished with 16 points and four steals. The eight steals from Rolfes is tied for the second most in a single game in program history. In addition,
Bethany Lancaster finished with 13 points while
Megan Illingworth grabbed a team high five rebounds.
The Gorloks will take off for the holiday break and will be back in action on Friday, December 29
th when they host Centre (Ky.) College for a nonconference matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
