Gorloks Move to 7-0 to Start the Season

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Blue Jays by a final score of 80-58 to improve to 7-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play. With the loss, Westminster drops to 2-5 on the year and 0-2 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks went 29-for-59 (49.2%) from the floor and 5-for-15 (33.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Blue Jays by a final count of 34-33 and pulled down six boards on the offensive end. They forced Westminster to turn the ball over 28 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 22 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 16 assists while racking up 12 steals.

Webster came out in the first quarter of the game and jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first seven minutes of the contest. They pushed their lead out to as many as 11 in the quarter before taking a 24-16 lead into the second. The Blue Jays picked it up to start the second and cut the lead to two in the first three minutes of the period. Webster would bounce back over the next few minutes and end the half on a 9-4 run to take a 35-28 lead into the locker room.

The Gorloks came out in the third quarter and started the half on a 17-4 run to take a 52-32 lead in the game. The Blue Jays would cut the lead to 14 in the quarter, but another run from Webster would put them up 58-40 heading into the final frame. The Gorloks would extend their lead out to as many as 26 in the fourth and cruised to their seventh straight win to start the season.

Bethany Lancaster led the way for Webster as she finished with 12 points and a team high 13 rebounds for her third double-double of the year. Emily Wilson and Julie Baudendistel also played well as Wilson finished with a team high 15 points to go along with eight rebounds while Baudendistel finished with 12 points. Lastly, Kate Rolfes finished with 11 points to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, December 6th when they travel to Eureka, Illinois, to take on the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 3 p.m.
