ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Beavers by a final score of 95-37 to improve to 22-2 on the season and 12-1 in conference play. With the loss, the Beavers fall to 2-21 on the season and 0-13 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 36-for-79 (45.6%) from the floor and 7-for-13 (58.3%) from behind the arc. They outrebouned the Beavers by a final count of 49-32 with 23 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced Blackburn to turn the ball over 38 times and turned those turnovers into 53 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks scored 56 of their 95 points in the paint and dished out 24 assists.
The Gorloks came out in the first quarter of the game and had a tough time getting anything going as they led 7-6 through the first five minutes. They picked it up as the quarter progressed and ended the period on a 10-6 run to give themselves a 17-12 lead heading into the second. They carried over their momentum into the second and went on a 21-5 run to start the quarter to push their lead to 38-17 with five minutes to play in the half. They only allowed the Beavers to score two more points in the final five minutes of the period and would take a 53-19 lead into the locker room.
Webster would play well to start the third quarter as they went on a 17-6 run in the first five minutes of the half to push their lead to 70-25. They extended their lead out to an many as 54 in the quarter and would take an 82-30 lead into the fourth. They never let the Beavers back into the game in the fourth quarter and would cruise to a 95-37 win.
Kate Rolfes led the way for the Gorloks as she finished with a team high 16 points in the contest.
Emily Wilson also played a great game as she scored 13 points while pulling down seven rebounds.
Julie Diveney and
Julie Baudendistel rounded out the top scorers for Webster as Diveney finished with 11 points while Baudendistel added 10. In addition,
Renasha Benjamin grabbed seven rebounds while
Trinniti Matthews dished out a game high four assists.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, February 18
th when they host the Westminster (Mo.) College Blue Jays for their final game of the regular season. Prior to the start of the game, we will honor the seniors on the team for their hard work and dedication to the program. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
