Gorloks Fall to #4 Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The #13 Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they took on #4 Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) College in their final game of the 2023 BSC Classic in Birmingham, Alabama. The Gorloks fell to the Panthers by a final score of 6-5 to drop to 1-2 on the season. With the win, the Panthers improve to 8-1 on the year.

The Gorloks were held to just five hits in the contest. The Panthers got on the board first in this one as they rallied for three runs in the bottom of the first to take a 3-0 lead. Webster answered back in the top of the third with a three-run homerun from Parker Wielt to tie the score at three, but a homerun from the Panthers in the bottom half of the frame gave Birmingham-Southern a 4-3 advantage. They added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and held a 6-3 lead midway through the game. Webster was able to cut the lead to 6-5 the bottom of the fifth, but were unable to find the equalizing run down the stretch as the Panthers closed them out to solidify the win.

Jordan Smevoll (0-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed three hits and two earned runs in 2.0 innings pitched. Ben Kowalski pitched the final six innings for Webster as he allowed just three hits and two earned runs while striking out seven.

Evan Evola led the way at the plate for the Gorloks as he went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. In addition, Parker Wielt went 1-for-4 with a three-run homerun, Nate Mosqueda went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, and Ben Swords added an RBI.

The Gorloks will return to the field on Friday, March 3rd when they host the Hanover (Ind.) College Panthers for their first game of the 2023 Webster Classic. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at GCS Credit Union Ballpark in Sauget, Ill.
