SAUGET, Ill. – The #17 Webster University baseball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh for their first game of the Webster Classic. The Gorloks were defeated by the Titans by a final score of 14-3 to fall to 1-3 on the season. With the win, the Titans improve to 3-0 on the year.
The Gorloks put together eight hits in the loss. They got on the board in the bottom of the first when
Parker Wielt drove in
Ben Swords to give Webster a 1-0 lead. They added to their lead in the bottom of the sixth off an RBI single from
Malik Wirges and held a 2-0 advantage through the first six innings of play. The Titan picked it up as the game progressed as they scored three runs in the top of the seventh, seven runs in the top of the eighth, and four runs in the top of the ninth to give themselves a 14-2 lead late in the contest. The Gorloks scored a late run in the bottom of the ninth off on an RBI double from
Matt Staker but the Titans secured the final outs of the game to solidify the win.
Alek Elges (1-1) was the starting pitcher in this one as he allowed five hits and three earned runs while striking out four in 7.0 innings on the mound.
Ben Kowalski,
Caleb Zbrozek, and
Adam Hill pitched in relief as the three combined to allow seven hits and eight earned runs.
Ben Swords and
Matt Staker led the way at the plate as they both went 2-for-4 in the game. Swords recorded a run scored while Staker recorded an RBI. In addition,
Parker Wielt went 1-for-4 with an RBI and
Malik Wirges went 1-for-3 with an RBI.
The Gorloks will continue play in the Webster Classic tomorrow, March 5
th when they host the Benedictine (Ill.) University Eagles for a nonconference matchup. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
