Gorloks Extend Streak to Seven

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled down Big Bend to take on the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins in the SLIAC Game of the Week. The Gorloks, who are receiving votes in the latest WBCA Division III Top 25 Coaches Poll, defeated the Griffins by a final score of 84-71 to improve to 19-2 on the season and 9-1 in conference play. With the loss, the Griffins drop to 11-10 on the year and 6-4 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks went 34-for-73 (46.6%) from the floor and 4-for-14 (28.6%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Griffins by a final count of 37-29 and pulled down 14 boards on the offensive end. They forced Fontbonne to turn the ball over 19 times and turned those turnovers into 16 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks also dished out 18 assists while scoring 56 of the 84 points in the paint.

Webster came out in the first quarter and jumped out to an early 9-2 lead in the first three minutes of the game. The Griffins settled in as the quarter progressed and ended the quarter on a 17-8 run to take a 19-17 lead into the second. Fontbonne would extend their lead to three early in the second, but a 14-4 run from Webster would give them 31-24 lead with six minutes to play in the half. The Griffins would cut the lead to two over the next minute, but the Gorloks would push their lead back out to as many as seven before taking a 44-38 advantage into the locker room.

Webster carried over their momentum into the third quarter as they started the period on a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 15. The Griffins would cut the lead back down to single digits, but the Gorloks would take a 71-56 lead into the fourth. Webster would push their lead to as many as 20 in the fourth quarter and would cruise to their seventh straight win.

Julie Baudendistel had a massive game for the Gorloks as she finished with 21 points and a career high 16 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Kate Rolfes also had a great game as she finished with a career high 23 points. In addition, Bethany Lancaster finished with 16 points while Emily Wilson added 13.

The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, February 4th when they host the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
