CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they traveled to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks were able to stay undefeated on the season as they defeated the Beavers by a final score of 94-34 to improve to 14-0 on the year and 7-0 in the SLIAC. With the loss, Blackburn drops to 3-11 on the season and 0-7 in conference play.
Webster went 37-for-83 (44.6%) from the floor and 5-for-22 (22.7%) from behind the arc. They held the Beavers to just 14 field goals in the game while forcing them to turn the ball over 38 times. The Gorloks turned the 38 turnovers into 41 points on the offensive end of the floor. Webster also dished out 23 assists in the contest.
The Gorloks came out in the first quarter and jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the first four minutes of the game. The Beavers would cut the lead five over the next few minutes, but a 14-3 run from Webster to end the frame would put them up 26-10 heading into the second. The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second and grew their lead to 41-14 midway through the quarter. They would end the half on a 15-7 run and took a 56-21 lead into the locker room.
Webster played tough defense in the third quarter and would outscore the Beavers 23-4 in the frame. They would never let Blackburn back in the contest and they cruised to their 14
th straight win to start the season.
The Gorloks got contributions from everyone in this one as 15 different players found the bottom of the basket.
Julie Baudendistel led the way as she finished with a game high 23 points.
Bethany Lancaster and
Kate Rolfes also finished in double figures as Lancaster had 14 while Rolfes added 10. Lancaster also grabbed a team high six rebounds while
Nysa Gilchrist dished out a game high five assists.
The Gorloks will return home on Saturday, January 13
th when they host the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
