ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins by a final score of 92-56 to improve to 15-0 on the year and 8-0 in conference play. With the loss, Fontbonne drops to 2-13 on the year and 2-6 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 32-for-75 (42.7%) from the floor and 7-for-19 (36.8%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Griffins by a final count of 45-43 with 18 rebounds coming on the offensive end. The Gorloks forced Blackburn to turn the ball over 32 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 33 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 14 assists while recording 16 steals.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and took it to the Griffins early as they jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Fontbonne finally got on the board with five minutes left in the first, but the Gorloks would end the quarter on a 12-2 run to take a 22-4 lead into the second. The Griffins would hit a three on their first possession of the second, but a 21-4 run over the next few minutes would put Webster up 43-11 late in the half. Fontbonne would outscore the Gorloks 10-5 down the stretch but Webster would take a 48-21 lead into the locker room.
The Gorloks came out in the third quarter and went on a 23-12 run to extend their lead to 71-33 midway through the quarter. They would push their lead out to as many as 39 in the frame and would take a 76-40 lead into the fourth. Webster would extend their lead to 40 to start the fourth and never let the Griffins back in the game as they cruised to their 15
th straight win to start the season.
Webster had five players score in double figures including
Kate Rolfes who finished with a game high 21 points. In addition to Rolfes,
Julie Baudendistel,
Jordyn Grimes, and
Emily Wilson each finished with 12 points while
Bethany Lancaster added 11. Grimes and Lancaster also picked up five steals while Lancaster led the team with seven rebounds.
The Gorloks will be back in action on Thursday, January 18
th when they travel to Columbus, Mississippi, to take on the Mississippi University for Women for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
