ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Fontbonne (Mo.) University Griffins in a rematch of last years SLIAC Championship Game. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins by a final score of 76-63 to improve to 7-8 on the season and 5-3 in conference play. With the loss, the Griffins drop to 10-5 on the year and 5-3 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 27-for-61 (44.3%) from the floor and 3-for-13 (23.1%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Griffins by a final count of 47-34 with 15 rebounds coming on the offensive end. The Gorloks forced Fontbonne to turn the ball over 15 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 17 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out seven assists while recording 10 steals and five blocks.
The Gorloks came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to a 6-3 lead early. The Griffins settled in as the game progressed and tied the score at six before going on a 9-2 run to give themselves a seven point lead. They would extend their lead out to nine over the next few minutes, but a 20-12 run from the Gorloks to end the half would put them down just 31-30 at the break.
Webster would carry their momentum over into the second half and started the period on an 11-6 run to give themselves a four-point lead. The Griffins responded with an 8-0 run of their own to take a four-point advantage, but a 31-9 run from the Gorloks over the next nine minutes would put them up 18 late in the contest. The Griffins did their best to get back into the game, but the damage was done as the Gorloks held them off down the stretch to solidify their fifth straight win.
Nate Jones led the way for Webster as he finished with a career high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds.
Jemard Sykes II and
Jason Coleman also played well as they each finished with 17 points. In addition,
Karl Moore Jr. finished with nine points and a game high 10 rebounds to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Thursday, January 18
th when they travel to Columbus, Mississippi, to take on the Mississippi University for Women Owls for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m.
