ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Eureka (Ill.) College Red Devils for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Red Devils by a final score of 75-41 to improve to 18-0 on the season and 11-0 in the SLIAC. With the loss, Eureka drops to 4-14 on the season and 2-9 in conference play.
Webster went 30-for-66 (45.5%) from the floor and 4-for-11 (36.4%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Red Devils by a final count of 40-32 with nine boards coming on the offensive end. They forced the Red Devils to turn the ball over 35 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 30 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 13 assists while recording 19 steals.
Webster came out in the first quarter and played well from the start as they jumped out to a 13-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game. The Red Devils would settle in and cut the lead to five, but a 7-2 run from Webster to end the quarter put them up 23-13 heading into the second. The Gorloks carried their momentum into the second and started the quarter on a 9-2 run to extend their lead to 17 midway through the frame. They would outscore the Red Devils 10-4 down the stretch and held a 42-19 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Gorloks came out in the second half and extended their lead to 25 on their first possession of the half. The Red Devils would cut the lead to 22 over the next few minutes, but a 16-9 run from Webster to end the quarter put them up 62-33 heading into the fourth. The Gorloks would outscore the Red Devils 13-8 in the final frame to solidify their 18
th straight win to start the season.
The Gorloks had three players finish in double figures as
Julie Baudendistel finished with a game high 14 points,
Nysa Gilchrist added 12 points, and
Claire Williams finished with 10.
Bethany Lancaster and
Megan Illingworth both grabbed a team high six rebounds while
Jena Stannard dished out a game high four assists.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, January 27
th when they host the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
