ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University men's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Greenville (Ill.) University Panthers for the teams annual Coaches vs. Cancer game. The Gorloks were defeated by the Panthers by a final score of 125-121 to drop to 9-10 on the season and 7-5 in the SLIAC. With the win, Greenville moves to 14-5 on the season and 10-2 in conference play.
The Gorloks went 46-for-76 (60.5%) from the floor and 1-for-3 (33.3) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Panthers by a final count of 55-42 with 15 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced the Panthers to turn the ball over 18 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 30 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 21 assists while posting six blocks.
It was a track meet from the start in this one as Greenville came out and jumped out to a 18-10 lead in the first four minutes of the game. They pushed their lead to 12 over the next few minutes, but a 12-5 run from Webster cut the Greenville lead to five midway through the half. The Gorloks would cut the lead down to as many as three, but another run from Greenville would put them up 53-42 late in the half. The teams would exchange baskets down the final stretch of the half and Greenville would take a 66-55 lead into the locker room.
Greenville came out in the second half and immediately hit a three to extend their lead to 14. Webster battled back and answered with a 23-9 run to tie the score at 78 with just under 15 minutes to play. The Gorloks would take the lead just a few seconds later and held a 94-88 advantage midway through the half. Greenville would bounce back and tie the score at 94, and then outscored the Gorloks 31-27 down the stretch to solidify the win.
Nate Jones led the way for Webster as he finished with a career high 39 points to go along with nine rebounds.
Karl Moore Jr. and
Jason Coleman also had great games as Moore Jr. recorded 12 points and a game high 16 rebounds for his third double-double of the season while Coleman added 18 points and nine rebounds. In addition,
Jalen Davis finished with 15 points,
Jemard Sykes II added 14 points, and
Josh Luster finished with eight points to round out the top performers for the Gorloks.
The Gorloks will hit the road for their next two games starting with a Wednesday, January 31
st matchup against Spalding (Ky.) University in Louisville, Kentucky. The game is set to start at 7:30 p.m. EST.
