ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Spalding (Ky.) University Golden Eagles for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Golden Eagles by a final score of 83-60 to improve to 12-0 on the season and 5-0 in conference play. With the loss, Spalding drops to 4-8 on the year and 2-3 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 32-for-79 (40.5%) from the floor and 1-for-16 (6.3%) from behind the arc. They were outrebounded by the Golden Eagles by a final count of 43-36 with 20 rebounds coming on the offensive end. The Gorloks forced Spalding to turn the ball over 45 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 46 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 16 assists while recording 29 steals.
The Gorloks came out in the first half of the game and jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the first minute of the contest. Spalding would battle back and cut the lead to one, but Webster would outscore Spalding 6-4 down the stretch to take a 18-15 lead into the second. The Gorloks would carry over their momentum into the second and started the quarter on an 8-2 run to extend their lead to nine. Spalding would cut the lead back down to seven, but a 17-11 run from Webster to end the half put them up 47-34 at the break.
In the second half, Webster came out of the locker room and went on a 17-5 run to start the quarter to extend their lead to 25. They would outscore the Golden Eagles 5-2 down the stretch and held a 69-41 lead heading into the final frame. The Gorloks would get outscored 19-14 in the fourth but the damage had been done as Webster closed them out down the stretch to solidify the win.
Webster had 12 different players score in this one including
Julie Baudendistel who finished with a game high 22 points.
Emily Wilson and
Bethany Lancaster also played well as Wilson finished with 17 points while Lancaster had 14. In addition,
Megan Illingworth led the team with seven rebounds while
Nysa Gilchrist added a team high three assists.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Saturday, February 6
th when they host the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to tip-off at 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
