ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they played host to the Principia (Ill.) College Panthers for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Panthers by a final score of 85-50 to improve to 13-0 on the season and 6-0 in conference play. With the loss, Principia drops to 7-6 on the year and 4-2 in the SLIAC.
Webster went 34-for-61 (55.7%) from the floor and 6-for-9 (66.7%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Panthers by a final count of 34-33 with 12 rebounds coming on the offensive end. The Gorloks forced Principia to turn the ball over 28 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 32 points on the other end of the floor. Webster also dished out 16 assists while recording 13 steals.
The Gorloks got off to a great start in this one as they jumped out to an 15-5 lead in the first five minutes of the game. Webster continued to play well as the quarter progressed and outscored the Panthers 14-8 down the stretch to take a 29-13 lead into the second. The Gorloks carried over their momentum into the second quarter and started the frame on a 13-5 run to extend their lead to 24. Principia would cut the lead back down to 21, but a three from
Kate Rolfes to end the half would put Webster up 49-25 at the break.
Webster came out in the third quarter and grew their lead to 30 with three minutes to play in the period. They would end the frame on an 8-0 run and took a 69-31 lead into the final quarter. The Gorloks would get outscored 19-16 in the fourth but the damage had been done as the Gorloks cruised to their 13
th straight win to start the season.
Kate Rolfes led the way for Webster as she finished with a game high 20 points after going 4-for-5 from behind the arc.
Julie Baudendistel and
Bethany Lancaster also finished in double figures as Baudendistel had 16 points while Lancaster had 11. Lancaster also pulled down a game high eight rebounds while dishing out a game high four assists.
The Gorloks will return to the court on Wednesday, January 10
th when they travel to Carlinville, Illinois, to take on the Blackburn (Ill.) College Beavers for a SLIAC matchup. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
