WU's Emily Wilson Achieves New Career-Highs In Victory Over IC

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued non-conference play hosting Illinois College Wednesday evening in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks are off to a perfect 3-0 start to the 2024-25 season by defeating the Lady Blues by the final score of 75-58. WU's Emily Wilson had a career-night in multiple statistical categories that included 26 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks, and four steals. 

Webster opened this non-conference decision with the possession as Wilson got her career-night started with the first basket of the game. After a successful layup by Kaimyla Nolen for the 4-2 lead, IC took the 7-4 advantage with back-to-back baskets. Moments later, the Lady Blues took the 12-10 lead with a three-point basket. 

Midway through the first quarter, the Gorloks countered with a 10-0 run that took the 20-12 advantage. In the run, Wilson contributed seven points as Julie Diveney connected on a two-point jump shot while Mattie Jones added a point at the free-throw line. Webster and IC exchanged baskets that ended the quarter as the Gorloks took the 22-16 lead.

Webster opened the second quarter with back-to-back baskets by Wilson and Gilchrist that increased the lead to double-digits at 26-16. Moments later, IC cut the lead down to two at 26-24 with a 8-0 run. Immediately following the IC run, the Gorloks countered with a 9-0 run that increased the lead back to double-digits at 35-24. In the run, Wilson added back-to-back baskets while Diveney knocked down a deep three-point basket. The run was capped off with points at the free-throw line by Emily Kerce and Nolen. With less than two minutes remaining in the first half, Rylee Dendow added a basket that gave the Gorloks the 37-28 lead at halftime.   

The Gorloks opened the second half with a 10-2 run that increased the lead to 47-30. In the run, Meghan Illingworth contributed five points while Wilson added three points as Claire Williams capped it off with a basket in the paint. Moments later, the Lady Blues chipped back in the game with a 9-1 run that cut the lead down to nine at 48-39. Webster and IC continued the game exchanging points as a three-point basket by Jenna Bowman gave the Gorloks the 54-44 lead. Webster closed out the third quarter with a 7-2 run that included four free-throws by Wilson for the 61-45 advantage. 

Webster opened the final quarter with a 6-2 run that included baskets in the paint by Williams, Gilchrist, and Illingworth that took the 67-48 lead. Midway through the quarter, Wilson knocked down a pair of free-throws which was followed up with a basket in the paint that secured her career-high of 26 points. The Gorloks added the final four points of the game at the free-throw line as Aleyna Sherman and Williams drained two apiece. 

In addition to Wilson's game-high of 26 points, Illingworth added 11 points while Gilchrist added nine points. Gilchrist led the Gorloks with five assists while Dendow recorded a career-high seven rebounds. Defensively, Webster generated 20 turnovers that resulted in 24 points on the offensive end. 

The Gorloks will close out this four-game homestand and open conference play hosting the Blue Jays of Westminster College on November 26th starting at 5:30PM in Grant Gymnasium.
