Gorloks Take Down Blue Jays In SLIAC Opener

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team opened conference play hosting Westminster College Tuesday evening in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks battled the Blue Jays closely and earned the SLIAC opener by the final score of 77-73. With the victory, Webster improves to 5-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Westminster exchanged a basket that included a basket by Emily Wilson that tied the game at two apiece. Moments later, the Gorloks generated an 8-0 run that took the 10-4 lead. In the run, Bethany Lancaster contributed four points while Nysa Gilchrist and Wilson added two points each. 

With just over four minutes left in the opening quarter, the Blue Jays countered with a 9-3 run that tied the game at 13 apiece. In the final second of the period, WU's sophomore Kaimyla Nolen drained the buzzer-beater three-point basket that gave the Gorloks the 16-13 lead. 

Webster opened the second quarter with an 8-2 run that increased the lead to nine at 24-15. In the run, four different student-athletes recorded with a basket which included Wilson, Nolen, Meghan Illingworth, and Rylee Denbow. Shortly later, the Blue Jays cut the lead down to four at 26-22 with a 7-2 run. WU's Wilson closed out the half with a layup that gave the Gorloks the 28-22 lead at the break.

Webster and Westminster opened the second half exchanging baskets that generated a 36-33 Gorlok lead. In that stretch of points, WU's Claire Williams knocked down a pair of three-point baskets while Aleyna Sherman drained two free-throws. Moments later, Westminster cut the lead down to two at 38-36 on the three-point basket by their leading scorer in Annette Ramirez. Just over a minute later, Ramirez kept the lead at three with a pair of free-throws. 

Midway through the quarter, Webster responded with a 12-3 run that increased the lead to double-digits at 55-43. In the run, Sherman and Williams added five points while Illingworth cashed in a mid-range jumper. Immediately following the Webster run, Westminster countered with a 9-0 run that cut the lead back down to three at 55-52. WU's Wilson closed out the quarter by sinking a pair of free-throws that made the score 57-52. 

The Gorloks opened the final quarter with back-to-back baskets by Denbow and Sherman that increased the lead to 61-52. Moments later, the Blue Jays cut the lead down to three at 61-58 with a 6-0 run. Immediately following the WC run, WU's Lancaster responded with five consecutive points that made the score 66-58. 

With five minutes remaining in the game, the Blue Jays answered with a 10-4 run that cut the lead down to two at 70-68. Moments later, Wilson got the home crowd on their feet when she battled through the contact and converted the conventional three-point play by sinking the free-throw that gave Webster the 73-68 lead. In the final minute of regulation, Williams sealed the victory by netting two free-throws.    

For the game, Wilson led the Gorloks with a team-high 23 points and two blocks. In addition, Williams recorded 13 points while shooting three-of-five from behind the arc while Lancaster secured a team-high nine rebounds. Sherman recorded a season-high nine points in the victory. 

The Gorloks will have their first road trip of the season visiting Augustana College on Saturday, November 30 with tip-off scheduled for 1:00PM in Rock Island, Illinois.
