Gorloks Stay Perfect With 74-66 Victory Over Babson; Denbow Records Career-High 15 Points

GALLATIN, Tenn. - The Webster University women's basketball team opened tournament play at the Music City Classic hosted by Welch College Thursday afternoon. The Gorloks extended their win streak to eight games with a 74-66 victory over Babson College. Three student-athletes achieved double-figures that included a career-high of 15 points by Rylee Denbow while shooting three-of-five from behind the arc off the bench.

Webster and Babson opened this non-conference decision with back-and-forth action to a tie at six apiece. In that stretch, Emily Wilson drained a three-point basket which was followed up by a free-throw when Bethany Lancaster netted a pair of free throws. After a layup by Wilson and a pair of free-throws by BC's Samantha Reale at eight apiece, Webster answered with a 8-2 run. In the run, Wilson added six more points to her night while Illingworth cashed in on another basket in the paint for the 16-10 advantage. 

With less than two minutes left in the quarter, the Gorloks increased their lead to eight at 20-12 that included a pair of free-throws by Lancaster and a mid-range jumper by Denbow. Babson closed out the quarter with back-to-back baskets that cut the lead down to four at 20-16. 

The Gorloks opened the second quarter with a 12-2 run that increased their lead to double digits at 32-18. In the run, Wilson scored seven points as Illingworth added another basket in the paint. Denbow capped off the run with her first three-point basket of the game that increased the lead to 32-18. 

Moments later, Babson responded with four consecutive points that cut the lead to eight at 32-24. The Gorloks closed out the first half at the free-throw line as Claire Williams and Lancaster both netted a pair that generated the halftime lead of 36-24.  

Babson opened the second half with four straight points when Kaimyla Nolen answered with a conventional three-point play that increased the lead back to double-digits at 39-28. Shortly later, Babson cut the lead down to five at 50-45 on Reale's free throws. The Gorloks closed out the quarter on a 10-5 run that started on a pair of free-throws by Nysa Gilchrist. In addition to Gilchrist, Lancaster added a basket in the paint when Denbow answered with back-to-back three-point baskets that maintained a 60-50 lead. 

The Gorloks opened the final quarter with consecutive baskets in the paint by Denbow and Lancaster that increased the lead to 64-50. Moments later, Babson cut the lead down to eight at 64-56 with a 6-0 run. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks answered with a 6-1 run that included four points by Lancaster and a mid-range jumper by Wilson that made the score 70-57.

With less than a minute to go, Babson cut the lead down eight with a 5-0 run. WU's Denbow closed out her career-night with a pair of free-throws that generated the final score.


For the game, Wilson led all scorers with 24 points that included 19 first half points on nine-of-13 from the field. Lancaster recorded her third double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds. In addition, Denbow closed out the double-figure scores with 15 points. 

Defensively, the Gorloks generated 11 steals led by Lancaster and Williams with three apiece that turned into 26 points on the offensive end. 

The Gorloks will close out tournament play on Friday, December 20 with a contest against the University of Lynchburg starting at 5:00PM.
