Hibbert’s Career-High 20 Points Lift Gorloks Over SLIAC Preseason Favorites Scots

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team opened a four-game homestand by hosting newly-added conference member Lyon College Thursday evening in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks took down the pre-season conference favorites Fighting Scots by the final score of 75-69 led by Jonah Hibbert's career-high of 20 points. With the victory, the Gorloks improved to 2-0 in conference play.  

The Gorloks opened this decision in an early 10-4 deficit that included consecutive baskets from Gabe Mccrary. Moments later, Webster cut the deficit down to two at 10-8 with back-to-back baskets from Karl Moore Jr. and Sebastian Reed. From the 14th minute mark to the seven minute mark, Webster and Lyon exchanged baskets as the Fighting Scots generated a 18-14 lead. 

On the next two Gorlok possessions, Hibbert and Jemard Sykes II gave Webster the 20-18 lead with back-to-back three-point baskets. LC's Frank Toney immediately answered with a three-point basket that put Lyon back on top at 21-20. Moments later, Webster countered with an 8-2 run that increased the lead to five at 28-23. In the run, Sykes II added five points while Mccrary contributed a lay-in as Reed added one point. The Gorloks closed out the first half with an 8-3 run that included baskets from Moore Jr, Luster, Reed, and Justin Ugo that generated a halftime lead of 36-29. 

In the opening minutes of the second half, Webster and Lyon exchanged baskets to a 42-36 advantage that included baskets from Mccrary and Reed. At the 15:54 mark, Lyon tied the game at 42 apiece on a three-point basket by Trenton Bell. Moments later, the Fighting Scots responded with a 12-4 run that took the 54-48 lead.

Midway through the second half, Hibbert responded with 12 consecutive points for the Gorloks as his third three-point basket of the game gave Webster the 60-58 lead. Moments later, Moore Jr increased the Gorlok lead to five at 65-59 by sinking a pairing of free-throws. 

With just over two minutes remaining in the game, The Gorloks added a 7-2 run that increased the lead to eight at 71-63. In the run, Moore Jr and Alpha Diallo added layups while Hibbert capped off the run with his fourth three-point basket of the game. In the final minute of regulation, Diallo and McCrary added the final baskets for Webster that generated the final score. 

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figure scoring marks led by Hibbert with 20 points that included shooting four-of-eight from behind the arc. In addition, Sykes II and Mccrary contributed 14 points apiece while Moore Jr added 10. Defensively, Moore Jr and Diallo recorded all seven of the team's blocks as Moore led with four. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play this Saturday, December 7 hosting Mississippi University for Women at 3:00PM in Grant Gymnasium.
