Gorloks Earn Double-Digit Victory Over Lyon

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team opened a two-game conference homestand hosting newly-added Lyon College Thursday evening in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks extended their unbeaten streak to six games with a 76-66 victory over the Fighting Scots. With the victory, Webster improves to 6-0 overall and 2-0 in conference play

The Gorloks opened this decision in a 12-4 deficit that included baskets from Nysa Gilchrist and Bethany Lancaster. Midway through the quarter, Webster cut the deficit down to two at 12-10 with a 6-0 run. In the run, Kaimyla Nolen and Rylee Denbow scored their first baskets of the game while Gilchrist capped it off with a layup. The Fighting Scots closed out the quarter with a 5-3 run that generated a 17-13 deficit. 

Webster opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run that started on a basket by Gilchrist. Moments later, sophomore Aleyna Sherman tied the game at 17 apiece with a jump shot near the paint. On the next Gorlok possession, senior Claire Williams knocked down a deep three-point basket that gave Webster their first lead of the game at 20-17. Senior Emily Wilson capped off the run with a layup that increased the lead to 22-17.  

Less than two minutes later, the Fighting Scots cut the lead down to one at 24-23 with a 6-2 run that included a basket by Grace Hupp. Following a pair of free-throws from WU's Wilson and LC's Natalya Kaza, the Gorloks increased the lead to four at 29-25 that included a basket from Emily Kerce and a free-throw by Lancaster. LC's Kaza closed out the half with a buzzer-beater as Webster took the 29-27 lead to the break. 

The Gorloks opened the second half with an 8-0 run that generated the double-digit lead of 37-27. In the run, Wilson contributed four points while Gilchrist and Lancaster added a basket each. Immediately following the WU run, Lyon responded with an 8-0 run of their own that made the score 37-35.

On the next Webster possession, Sherman increased the lead to five at 40-35 with a three-point basket as Lancaster shortly followed up with a layup that kept the lead at five. With less minutes remaining in the quarter, the Gorloks increased the lead to eight at 50-42 with a 8-2 run. In the run, Williams and Denbow contributed three points each while Gilchrist added a lay-in. LC's Kaza closed out the scoring for the quarter by adding four points that generated a four-point lead of 50-46.   

Webster opened the final quarter with a 12-3 run that increased the lead to double-digits to 62-49. In the run, Wilson contributed six points while Gilchrist, Lancaster, and Nolen added two points each. Moments later, the Fighting Scots answered with a 9-0 run that cut the lead down to four at 64-60. 

With less than four minutes remaining in the game, the Gorloks countered with an 11-2 run for the 75-62 advantage. In the run, Lancaster added seven points while Kerce and Wilson contributed two points each.

For the game, Lancaster recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds while Wilson matched Lancaster with 18 points. In addition, Gilchrist contributed 12 points as Williams added eight points. Defensively, the Gorloks generated 14 steals that turned into 20 points on the offensive side of the court. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play hosting the newly-added Owls of Mississippi University for Women on Saturday, December 7 at 1:00PM in Grant Gymnasium.
