Five Student-Athletes Achieve Double-Figures In Dominant Victory Over MUW

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team continued conference play hosting the Owls of Mississippi University for Women Saturday afternoon in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks scored 53 first half points that led to the 80-57 over the Owls. With the victory, Webster improves to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in SLIAC play. 

The Gorloks opened this decision with an 8-1 run that started on a pair of free-throws from Nysa Gilchrist. On the next two Webster possessions, Kaimyla Nolen and Bethany Lancaster added baskets in the paint. Less than two minutes later, Gilchrist capped off the run with a layup. 

Midway through the opening quarter, the Owls cut the lead down to four at 10-6 with a 5-2 run. At the 3:30 mark, Claire Williams started an 8-0 run with a three-point basket as Emily Kerce followed up with three consecutive points. Williams capped off the run with a fastbreak layup for the double-digit lead at 18-6. The Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 5-1 run that included baskets from Gilchrist and Emily Wilson and a free-throw by Williams for the 23-9 advantage. 

Webster opened the second quarter with a 5-0 run that included five consecutive points by Wilson that increased the lead to 28-9. Moments later, the Owls responded with an 11-1 run that cut the lead down to nine at 29-20. At the 7:08 mark, the Gorloks erupted for a 16-0 run that included 12 consecutive points by Lancaster which was followed up by a basket by Wilson. Lancaster closed out the run with a conventional three-point play as she drained the free-throw attempt for the 45-20 lead. Following baskets from Lancaster and Wilson, Webster and MUW closed out the half exchanging points as Grace Hupp and Rylee Denbow contributed two points each that generated a halftime score of 53-27. 

Webster opened the second half with a 6-2 run that featured baskets from Gilchrist, Williams, and Wilson for the 59-29 advantage. Moments later, the Owls responded with an 8-2 run that made the score 61-39. The Gorloks closed out the scoring for the quarter with points from Kerce, Nolen, and Gilchrist that generated the 67-44 lead. 

Webster and MUW started the final quarter exchanging points as Wilson added a layup. At the 8:47 mark, the Gorloks generated an 8-0 run that started on a layup by Nolen. Moments later, Williams and Nolen added back-to-back three-point baskets while Denbow capped off the run with a pair of free-throws. The Owls closed out the game with a 7-0 run that generated the final score of 80-57. 

For the game, five student-athletes achieved double-figures led by Lancaster with 18 points while shooting a perfect eight-of-eight from the free-throw line. In addition, Wilson contributed 15 points while shooting seven-of-eight from the field. Gilchrist and Williams scored 12 points each as Williams shot two-of-three from behind the arc. Nolen closed out the double-figure scorers with 11 points as she shot five-of-six from the field. 

At the glass, Hupp led the Gorloks with a career-high seven rebounds while Gilchrist secured six. Defensively, Webster generated 18 steals led by Nolen and Hupp with four apiece. As a team, Webster recorded a season-best 84 percent clip from the free-throw line. 

The Gorloks will travel to the state of Tennessee on Thursday, December 19 and participate in the Music City Classic with the first draw against Babson College starting at 1:00PM in Gallatin, Tennessee.
