Gorloks Win 23rd Straight

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The 25th ranked Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this afternoon when they traveled down the street to Fontbonne (Mo.) University to take on the Griffins for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Griffins by a final score of 88-56 to improve to 23-0 on the season and 16-0 in conference play. With the loss, the Griffins drop to 5-18 on the season and 5-11 in the SLIAC.

The Gorloks went 37-for-65 (56.9%) from the floor and 5-for-15 (33.3%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Griffins by a final count of 41-26 with 15 rebounds coming on the offensive end. They forced the Griffins to turn the ball over 22 times in the game and turned those turnovers into 26 points on the other end of the floor. Webster held Fontbonne to just 18 field goals in the game and picked up nine steals.

Webster came out in the first quarter of the game and jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the first four minutes of the contest. The Griffins would settle in and cut the lead to four, but a 6-1 run from Webster to end the period would put them up 20-11 heading into the second. Webster carried their momentum over into the second quarter and extended their lead to 13 in the first two minutes of the frame. Fontbonne would cut the lead to four midway through the period, but a 15-6 run from Webster to end the half would put them up 44-31 at the break.

The Gorloks would come out in the second half and dominated the third quarter as they outscored the Griffins 27-12 to take a 71-43 lead into the fourth. Webster would grow their lead to 32 to start the fourth and never let Fontbonne back in the game as they cruised to their 23rd straight win to start the season.

Bethany Lancaster led the way for Webster as she finished with a game high 21 points to go along with a game high eight rebounds. Julie Baudendistel and Megan Illingworth also played well as Baudendistel finished with 15 points and six rebounds while Illingworth added 12 points. In addition, Kate Rolfes finished with nine points, Emily Wilson added eight points, and Jordyn Grimes finished with a game high four assists to round out the top performers for Webster.

The Gorloks will return home for their final two games of the regular season starting with a matchup on Thursday, February 15th against the Mississippi University for Women. The game is set to start at 5:30 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
