COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Webster University women's basketball team was back in action this evening when they played host to the Mississippi University for Women Owls for a SLIAC matchup. The Gorloks defeated the Owls by a final score of 99-61 to improve to 24-0 on the season and 17-0 in conference play. With the loss, the Owls drop to 7-14 on the year and 6-11 in the conference.
Webster went 40-for-80 (50.0%) from the floor and 6-for-18 (33.3%) from behind the arc. They outrebounded the Owls by a final count of 47-38 with 18 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Webster forced MUW to turn the ball over 23 times in the contest and turned those turnovers into 24 points on the other end of the floor. The Gorloks also dished out 27 assists while racking up 11 steals.
Webster came out in the first half of the game and got off to a slow start as the Owls led 5-4 after the first two minutes. The Gorloks would pick it up as the quarter progressed and would end the period on a 26-6 run to take a 30-11 lead into the second. Webster would carry their momentum over into the second and started the quarter on a 16-9 run to extend their lead to 26. The Owls would outscore Webster 5-2 down the stretch and the Gorloks would take a 48-25 lead into the locker room.
The Owls came out in the second half and cut the lead to 23 in the first few minutes of the period. The Gorloks would push their lead back to 26 over the next few minutes and would take a 67-41 lead into the final frame. They would outscore the Owls 32-20 in the fourth and cruised to their 24
th win of the season.
Webster had fourteen different players find the scorebook including
Emily Wilson who finished with a career high 27 points to go along with a team high 11 points for her first double-double of the season.
Meghan Illingworth and
Bethany Lancaster also finished in double figures as Illingworth finished with 11 points while Lancaster added 10. In addition,
Julie Baudendistel finished with eight points while
Nysa Gilchrist,
Emily Wilson, and
Aleyna Sherman each added four assists.
The Gorloks will be back in action on Saturday, February 17
th when they host the Lyon (Ark.) College Scots for their final game of the regular season. This game will serve as Senior Day for the women's basketball team and we will honor the seniors on the team prior to tip-off. The game is set to start at 1 p.m. in Grant Gymnasium.
