Gorloks Outduel Panthers In Offensive Showcase To Remain Unbeaten In SLIAC Play

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team opened a two-game conference homestand hosting Greenville University Saturday afternoon in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks achieved triple-digits and outdueled the Panthers by the final score of 114-109 for their sixth conference victory in a row. With the victory, Webster improves to 7-6 overall on the season.

In the opening minutes of action, Webster and Greenville exchanged baskets to a two-point deficit at 9-7. In that stretch, Karl Moore Jr scored four points while Jemard Sykes II added a driving layup as Josh Luster contributed a free-throw. Moments later, Greenville responded with a 8-3 run that increased the deficit to seven at 17-10 that included a three-point basket by Jonah Hibbert. Less than a minute later, the Gorloks answered with a 10-2 run that gave Webster their lead of the game at 20-19. In the run, Moore Jr and Sebastian Reed contributed back-to-back layups when Hibbert closed out the run with six consecutive points. 

Shortly later, the Panthers answered back with a 17-4 run that generated a deficit of 40-28. With the score sitting at 41-31 in favor of Greenville, the Gorloks erupted for a 16-0 run that reclaimed the lead at 47-41. In the run, Jalen Davis scored seven points as Hibbert contributed five while Gabe Mccrary and Reed added lay-ins.  With less than four minutes to go in the first half, the Panthers answered with an 8-0 run that took the 50-49 advantage. The Gorloks closed out the first half with a 9-3 run that generated a halftime lead of 58-53. 

In the first five minutes of the second half, Webster and Greenville traded baskets that pushed the game to a five-point lead at 75-70 that included seven points from Reed and five points from Moore Jr. Seconds later, the Panthers added a 6-0 run that was snapped by Moore Jr that tied the game at 77 apiece. 

For the next four minutes of play, Webster and Greenville continued to exchange baskets that generated a one-point deficit at 85-84. Midway through the second half, Webster regained the lead at 89-85 with a 5-0 run that included free-throws from Luster and Davis as Davis added a driving layup. Moments later, the Gorloks added a 6-1 run that included points from Luster, Alpha Diallo, and Justin Ugo that increased the lead to six at 97-91. 

Following a basket by GU's Ja'rod Webb, Webster increased their lead to nine at 102-93 with a 5-0 run that included baskets by Reed and Ugo while Mccrary added a free-throw. With five minutes remaining, the Panthers chipped back with a 7-3 run that cut the lead down to five at 105-100. 
Moments later, the Gorloks added a 6-2 run on layups by Reed, Mccrary, and Ugo that increased the lead back to nine at 111-102. In the final two minutes, Greenville cut the lead down to two at 111-109 with a 7-0 run. Webster closed out the game at the free-throw line as Sykes II and Davis added the final three points of the game.   

For the game, six Gorloks achieved double-figures led by McCrary with a season-best 19 points. In addition, Moore Jr, Reed, and Davis recorded 16 points apiece as Davis achieved a new season-high. WU's Hibbert and Ugo rounded the double-figures with 14 points and 10 points respectively. 

At the glass, Diallo led the team with a career-high 10 rebounds as Luster and Reed secured seven each. As a team, the Gorloks shot 56 percent from the field and outscored the Panthers in the paint by the margin of 74-52.  

The Gorloks will close out this two-game homestand hosting the Golden Eagles of Spalding University on Saturday, January 16 starting at 7:30PM in Grant Gymnasium.
