Men’s Basketball Drops First Conference Decision At Home To Spalding

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team concluded a two-game conference homestand hosting Spalding University Thursday evening in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks six-game undefeated conference streak came to a close with a 74-52 defeat to the Golden Eagles. The Gorloks are now tied in a three-way tie for first place with a 6-1 conference record. 

In the opening minutes of action, Webster and Spalding traded baskets to a tie at eight apiece that included eight consecutive points by Jemard Sykes II that featured back-to-back three-point baskets. Moments later, WU's Sebastian Reed gave the Gorloks the 14-10 advantage with six quick points. The Gorloks and Golden Eagles pushed the game to a 19-17 Gorlok lead that included a three-point basket by Josh Luster and a layup by Justin Ugo.

Midway through the first half, Spalding countered with a 13-5 run as a three-point basket by Sykes II cut the deficit down to four at 28-24. Following consecutive baskets by Reed, the Golden Eagles increased the deficit to 40-28 with a 7-0 run. The Gorloks closed out the first half with a 5-2 run on a layup by Ugo and three-point basket by Alpha Diallo that cut the deficit to nine at 42-33. 

WU's Sykes II opened the second half scoring for the Gorloks with a layup that cut the deficit to seven at 42-35. Following that basket, the Golden Eagles responded with a 9-2 run that included a basket by Reed that made the score 51-37. Moments later, Sykes II battled through the contact and converted the conventional three-point play at the line that cut the deficit down to 11 at 51-40. 

Midway through the second half, Webster and Spalding exchanged baskets that included four points by both Diallo and Ugo that made the score 59-46. With just over seven minutes remaining, Spalding countered with an 11-2 run that featured a basket by Diallo. WU's John Renken closed out the Gorlok scoring for the game with the final four points. 

For the game, the Gorloks were led offensively by Sykes II with 16 points as Reed contributed 15 points and six rebounds. Ugo led the Gorloks with seven rebounds while adding eight points. Diallo led the Gorloks' bench points with seven while Renken added a season-high four points. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play with a road visit to Principia College on Saturday, January 18 starting at 3:00PM in Elsah, Illinois.
