WU’s Hupp Achieves New Career-High In Convincing Victory Over Greenville

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team began a two-game conference homestand hosting the Panthers of Greenville University Saturday afternoon in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks controlled this decision from the tip-off and defeated the Panthers by the final score 75-51. With the victory, Webster improves to 11-2 overall and 5-1 in conference play. 

Webster and Greenville opened this decision exchanging baskets as that led to a tie at eight apiece. In that stretch, Emily Kerce got the Gorloks going with a layup when Lancaster responded with six consecutive points. Moments later, Nysa Gilchrist and Emily Wilson added back-to-back baskets that took the 12-11 advantage. With less than four minutes to go in the opening quarter, Rylee Denbow earned a trip to the free-throw line where she sank both attempts that gave Webster the 14-13 lead. After a pair of free-throws drained by GC's Alyssa Seymour, WU's Meghan Illingworth gave Webster the 16-15 lead with a basket in the paint. WU's Grace Hupp closed out the quarter with two three-point baskets that generated a 22-19 lead going into the second. 

The Panthers opened the second quarter with a basket by Seymour that generated a one-point deficit at 22-21. Moments later, Lancaster started a 10-0 run with a pair of free-throws and a layup. In addition to Lancaster, WU's Claire Williams and Hupp closed out the run with back-to-back three-point baskets for the 32-21 advantage. Immediately following the Webster run, Greenville responded with five consecutive points that cut the lead down to six at 32-26. WU's Denbow closed out the second quarter with seven straight points that included a three-point basket that generated a halftime lead of 39-29.

The Gorloks opened the third quarter with a 5-2 run that increased the lead back to double-digit at 44-31. Following a GU basket by Seymour, the Gorloks erupted for a 12-0 run that started on a layup by Lancaster. In addition to Lancaster, Williams netted another three-point basket when Wilson followed up with a basket in the paint. The run was capped off with five straight points by Hupp for the 56-33 advantage. In the final two minutes of the quarter, the Gorloks added six points on baskets from Illingworth, Lancaster, and Williams that generated a end of quarter score of 62-39. 

Webster and Greenville opened the final quarter trading free-throws that pushed the game to 65-43. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 6-0 run that included four points by Wilson and a basket by Lancaster that generated the score to 71-43. For the final five minutes of play, the Gorloks and Panthers swapped baskets that generated the final score.  

For the game, Lancaster recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 19 points and 12 rebounds. In addition, Hupp recorded a career-high 14 points while shooting four-of-seven from behind the arc. WU's Williams achieved double-figures with 10 points that included two three-point baskets. As a team, the Gorloks dominated the paint and outscored the Panthers 36-18. In addition, Webster forced 25 turnovers that led to 21 points on the offensive side. 

The Gorloks will close out this two-game homestand on Thursday, January 16 hosting the Golden Eagles of Spalding University starting at 5:30PM in Grant Gymnasium.
