WU’s Wilson Surpasses 1,000 Career Points In Double-Digit Victory Over Spalding

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball team closed out a two-game conference homestand hosting Spalding University Thursday evening in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks extended their conference win streak to three games with a 70-57 victory over the Golden Eagles. WU's Emily Wilson surpassed the 1,000 career points milestone with 17 points while securing a career-high 16 rebounds. With the victory, the Gorloks improved to 12-2 overall and earned a three-way for first place in the conference with a 6-1 SLIAC record.

In the opening minutes of play, the Gorloks fell in an early 8-0 deficit but Claire Williams got the team going with a fast break layup. On the next Gorlok possession, Emily Kerce found the cutter in Wilson as Wilson made the shot near the basket for her 1,000 career point in a Gorlok uniform that made the score 8-4. 

Moments later, Webster countered back with an 8-0 run that started on a pair of free-throws by Bethany Lancaster. Less than two minutes later, Jena Stannard continued the run with a three-point basket when Wilson added a free-throw that tied the game at 10 apiece. After a steal by Kaimyla Nolen, Nysa Gilchrist gave the Gorloks their first lead of the game with a fastbreak layup at 12-10 that capped off the run. 

With less than three minutes left in the opening quarter, the Golden Eagles responded with a 5-0 run that generated the deficit of 15-12. The Gorloks closed out the quarter with a 5-2 run that included a free-throw by Wilson and back-to-back baskets by Meghan Illingworth that tied the game at 17 apiece. 

Webster opened the second quarter with an 11-0 run that started on consecutive baskets by Lancaster. In addition to Lancaster, Kerce knocked down a corner three-point basket as Wilson capped off the run with back-to-back baskets for the 28-17 advantage.  Moments later, the Golden Eagles responded with a 7-0 run that cut the lead down four at 28-24. On the next Gorlok possession, Rylee Denbow started a 9-4 Gorlok run with a basket in the paint. Following the Denbow basket, Wilson drained a mid-range jumper when Grace Hupp added a three-point basket. Lancaster capped off the run with a basket in paint that generated the halftime lead of 37-28.

The Gorloks opened the second half red hot from the field that generated an 11-0 run that included seven consecutive points by Lancaster. WU's Williams and Gilchrist capped off the run with back-to-back baskets that increased the lead to 48-28. 

Shortly later, the Golden Eagles responded with a 12-3 run that cut the lead down to 51-40.  Webster closed out the third quarter on a 7-2 run that included five points by Wilson and a pair of free-throws by Kerce for the 58-42 advantage. 

In the opening minutes of the final quarter, Spalding chipped back with a 9-4 run that cut the lead back down to 11 at 62-51. Following a basket by Illingworth, the Golden Eagles responded with a 5-0 run that cut the lead down to eight at 64-56. With just over three minutes remaining in the game, the Gorloks put the game out of reach with a 6-0 run on baskets from Gilchrist and Lancaster while Wilson sank a pair of free-throws that generated the final score. 

For the game, Lancaster led all student-athletes with a game-high 22 points while shooting nine-of-14 from the field. In addition, Wilson secured her second double-double of the season with 17 points while leading all players with 16 rebounds. The starting five of Gilchrist, Williams, Kerce, Lancaster, and Wilson combined for 52 of the 70 total points in this contest. 

As a team, the Gorloks outscored the Golden Eagles 34-16 with points in the paint that included nine points on fast break opportunities.  

The Gorloks will start a two-game conference roadstand on Saturday, January 18 with a visit to Principia College starting at 1:00PM in Elsah, Illinois.
