WU’s Lancaster Records Eighth Double-Double Of Season In Road Victory Over Principia

ELSAH, Ill. - The Webster University women's basketball team began a two-game conference road stand with a visit to Principia College Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks extended their conference win streak to four games with a 65-56 road victory over the Panthers. WU's Bethany Lancaster led all student-athletes with 22 points and 11 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. With the victory, Webster improves to 13-2 overall and 7-1 in SLIAC play. 

In the opening minutes of play, Webster got off to a slow start offensively and got in an early 7-3 deficit as Lancaster recorded the first three points of the game for the Gorloks. Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks cut the deficit down to one at 10-9 with a 6-0 run. In the run, Grace Hupp knocked down a three-point basket while Kaimyla Nolen and Emily Wilson added points at the free-throw line. The Panthers closed out the first quarter with back-to-back baskets by Erinn Porter that generated a 14-9 deficit.

The Gorloks opened the second quarter with a 6-1 run and took their first lead of the game at 18-15. In the run, Wilson added four points while Claire Williams drained a three-point basket as Lancaster contributed a layup. Moments later, the Panthers countered with a 7-3 run and regained the lead at 22-21 as Jena Stannard knocked down a three-pointer for the Gorloks. Webster closed out the first half on a 9-2 run that included a pair of three-point baskets by Rylee Denbow as Stannard added her second three-point basket of the game for the 30-24 halftime advantage. 

In the opening minute of the third quarter, the Panthers cut the Gorloks lead down to four at 30-26 on a pair of free-throws by Principia's Brown. Shortly later, Lancaster countered with six consecutive points that extended the Gorlok lead to double-digits at 36-26. Midway through the quarter, Webster answered with a 10-3 run that started on four consecutive points by Lancaster. In addition to Lancaster, Hupp added another three-point basket while Meghan Illingworth contributed a basket in the paint. PC's Brown added the final basket of the quarter that gave Webster the 46-35 advantage. 

The Panthers opened the final quarter with a 11-3 run that cut the Gorlok lead down to five at 51-46. Moments later, Webster increased their lead back to nine at 55-46 with baskets from Williams, Wilson, and Lancaster. Less than two minutes later, Principia cut the lead down to four at 55-51 with a 5-0 run as that was the closest margin the Panthers would reach for the remainder of the game. With less than four left in regulation, the Gorloks increased their lead back to nine at 62-53 with a 7-3 run. In the run, Lancaster contributed four points while Dendow knocked down a deep three-point basket. With under two minutes left on the clock, WU's Williams put the game away with a deep three-point basket that led to victory.    

In addition to Lancaster, Denbow achieved double-figures with 10 points while shooting three-of-three from behind the arc. Defensively, Williams led the team with three steals as Wilson recorded the only block of the game. 

The Gorloks will close out this two-game road stand with a visit to Blackburn College on Wednesday, January 22 starting at 5:30PM in Carlinville, Illinois.
