Gorloks Achieved Highest Single-Game Scoring Total Of Season In Road Victory Over Blackburn

CARLINVILLE, Ill. - The Webster University women's basketball team closed out a two-game conference roadstand with a visit to Blackburn College Wednesday evening. The Gorloks achieved their highest single-game scoring total of the season with a 91-48 victory over the Beavers. With the victory, Webster improves to 14-2 overall while posting a five-game win streak to a 8-1 conference record. 

Webster opened this decision with a 11-3 run that included four points apiece by Bethany Lancaster and Emily Wilson. In addition, sophomore Emily Kerce got her night started with a free-throw while Claire Williams capped off the run with a mid-range jumper. Moments later, the Beavers countered with a 8-2 run that cut the lead down to one at 13-12. Midway through the quarter, Webster answered back and eventually closed out the quarter with an 11-2 run. In the run, five different Gorloks in Lancaster, Rylee Denbow, Kerce, Aleyna Sherman, and Meghan Illingworth scored a basket each that generated a 24-14 advantage.  

The Gorloks opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run that started on a three-point basket by Kerce. In addition to Kerce, Lancaster and Wilson added two points each while Nysa Gilchrist contributed a free-throw for the 32-14 advantage. At the 6:25 mark in the quarter, the Gorloks erupted for a 16-0 run that started on a pair of free-throws by Sherman. Moments later, Lancaster added six unanswered points when Denbow followed up with a layup. WU's Illingworth contributed six points in the run and capped off the run with back-to-back baskets that took the 50-19 lead. Webster closed out the first half scoring with a jumper from Gilchrist and a three-point basket by Denbow that generated a 55-24 halftime lead.   

Webster and Blackburn opened the second half exchanging baskets that pushed the score to 61-29.  Midway through the quarter, the Gorloks answered with a 9-1 run that started on back-to-back layups by Illingworth and Denbow. WU's Sherman capped off the run with five consecutive points that stretched the lead to 74-33. The Gorloks and Beavers closed out the quarter exchanging free-throws as Jena Stannard knocked down both for the 76-35 advantage. 

The Gorloks opened the final quarter with back-to-back baskets by Illingworth and Annie Sale that increased the lead to 80-35. Webster and Blackburn continued this contest trading baskets to the score of 84-41. Moments later, WU's Avery Forrester knocked down her first three-point basket in a Gorlok uniform when Amaya Johnson followed up with a pair of free-throws. WU's Kaelyn Stager closed out the scoring for the Gorloks with her first career basket in a Gorlok uniform. 

For the game, three Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Lancaster with 20 points while Illingworth recorded 16 points while shooting eight-of-11 from the field. Wilson rounded out the double-figure scores with 10 points.  In addition, Sherman achieved a career-high seven assists while Williams collected a team-high seven rebounds. As a team, Webster generated 19 steals that turned into 42 points on the offensive end. The Gorloks outscored the Beavers 45-10 in bench points and 44-10 with points in the paint. 

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Saturday, January 25 hosting the Griffins of Fontbonne University starting at 1:00PM in Grant Gymnasium.
