Gorloks Generate New All-Time Single-Game Scoring Record With 119 Points In Victory Over Griffins

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University women's basketball continued conference play and hosted Fontbonne University for the Battle of Big Bend Blvd Saturday afternoon in Grant Gymnasium. The Gorloks put on an absolute clinic and generated the new all-time single-game scoring record in program history with a dominant 119-61 victory over the Griffins. Prior to this decision, the highest single-game scoring record was set back on February 8, 2020 when the Gorloks scored 115 points against Principia College. With the victory, Webster improves to 15-2 overall and stands atop of the SLIAC standings with a 9-1 conference record.    

WU's Meghan Illingworth captured a new career-high of 27 points while shooting 12-of-14 from the field. In addition, fellow sophomore Kaimyla Nolen recorded new career-highs in assists and rebounds with 10 each.

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Fontbonne exchanged baskets to a 6-4 deficit that included back-to-back layups by Emily Wilson and Bethany Lancaster. Moments later, WU's Julie Diveney started and capped off an 8-0 run with two three-point baskets that featured a basket by Meghan Illingworth in-between for the 12-6 advantage.

Less than a minute later, the Gorloks countered with a 12-0 run that started on a three-point basket by Rylee Denbow. In addition to Denbow, Illingworth added five points while Aleyna Sherman scored four points that increased the lead to 24-9. In the final minute of the opening quarter, the Griffins added three points at the free-throw line when Wilson closed out the scoring with a mid-range jumper for the 26-12 lead. 

The Gorloks opened the second quarter with back-to-back baskets by Nysa Gilchrist and Wilson that pushed the score to 30-12. Moments later, the Griffins cut the lead down to 11 at 32-21 with a 9-2 run. Midway through the quarter, Webster countered with a 7-0 run that started on a three-point basket by Jena Stannard. Shortly later, Lancaster and Dendow followed up with back-to-back jumpers that increased the lead to 39-21. In the final four minutes of the second quarter, the Gorloks and Griffins traded baskets that included two baskets from Dendow and a basket each from Nolen, Stannard, Illingworth, and Sherman for a 52-36 halftime lead. 

Webster opened the second half with a 12-3 run as Claire Williams contributed eight points that included a pair of three-point baskets. In addition to Williams, Lancaster contributed a layup while Gilchrist and Emily Kerce added a free-throw each that pushed the score to 64-39. Less than a minute later, Webster answered with a 6-0 run that included three points each from Kerce and Illingworth. The Gorloks closed out the quarter with an 18-2 run that included nine points by Illingworth while Wilson added four. In addition, Kerce knocked down a three-point basket while Nolen added a layup for 92-49 advantage. 

Webster opened the final quarter with a 16-3 run that included four points each from Gilchrist, Illingworth, and Lancaster. In addition, Dendow added a free-throw when Avery Forrester capped off the run with a three-point basket for the 108-52 lead. 
In the final minutes of regulation, WU's Kaelyn Stager recorded a career-high five points that included a three-point basket. Stannard and Forrester closed out the scoring for the game with back-to-back three-point baskets that secured the new all-time single-game scoring total in program history with 119 points.  

In addition to Illingworth's career-high of 27 points, Denbow and Lancaster achieved double-figures with 12 apiece. WU's Wilson recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. 

As a team, the Gorloks outscored the Griffins 75-0 in bench points and 56-12 with points in the paint. In addition, Webster recorded new season-highs of 62 rebounds, 33 assists, and 13 made three-point baskets.

The Gorloks will start a three-game roadstand on Thursday, January 30 visiting the Fighting Scots of Lyon College starting at 5:30PM in Batesville, Arkansas.
