Five Gorloks Secure Double-Figures Led By Ugo’s Career High 26 Points In Victory Over Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Webster University men's basketball team returned to Grant Gymnasium Saturday afternoon and hosted Fontbonne University for the Battle of Big Bend Blvd. Five Gorloks secured double-figures led by Justin Ugo with a new career-high 26 points that led to 88-74 victory over the Griffins. With the victory, Webster improves 10-7 overall and extends their conference win streak to three games to a 9-1 conference record.  

During halftime, the Webster University Athletics Department hosted the St. Louis Falcons Special Olympics Basketball team for their annual 10-minute exhibition game where hundreds of Webster student-athletes cheered them along.

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Fontbonne exchanged baskets to a tie at four apiece that included baskets by Alpha Diallo and Ugo. Moments later, the Gorloks answered with a 7-1 run for the 11-5 advantage. In the run, Ugo contributed three points while Josh Luster and John Renken added a basket each. Immediately following the Webster run, Fontbonne countered with a 7-2 run that cut the lead down to one at 15-14. Less than a minute later, the Gorloks increased the lead to four at 20-16 on a layup by Ugo. 

Midway through the first half, the Griffins generated a 10-2 run that took the 26-22 advantage. With just over five minutes remaining in the first half, the Gorloks countered with a 9-2 run that included layups by Gabe Mccrary, Jemard Sykes II, and Sebastian Reed. WU's Sykes II gave the Gorloks the 31-28 advantage with a three-point basket. Moments later, the Griffins answered right back with a 10-3 run and took the 38-34 advantage that included a three-point basket by Sykes II. Webster and Fontbonne closed out the first half trading baskets that generated a halftime deficit of 42-36. 

In the opening minute of the second half, Fontbonne generated their highest lead of the game at 44-36 with a jumper by Casey Crowley. Immediately following that basket, the Gorloks erupted for a 14-0 run that took the 50-44 advantage. In the run, Luster knocked down a pair of three-point baskets while Ugo added four points in the paint. In addition, Mccrary and Reed each added two points. Less than a minute later, the Griffins countered with a 7-0 run that generated a one-point deficit at 51-50. Immediately following the Fontbonne run, Webster answered right back with an 8-0 run of their own that started on back-to-back baskets by Reed. WU's Diallo followed up with a layup when Ugo increased the lead to 58-51 with a jumper. 

Midway through the second half, Fontbonne cut the lead down to five on two separate occasions with last time at 63-58 on a three-point basket by the SLIAC leading scorer in Charles Nelson. Moments later, the Gorloks increased their lead back to double-digits at 73-61 with a 10-3 run. In the run, Sykes II knocked down a pair of three-point baskets while Renken added four points in the paint. With less than five minutes left in regulation, the Gorloks answered with a 10-2 run that generated their largest lead of the game 86-69. In the run, Ugo added six points with Mccrary and Sykes II added two points each. In the final moments, Ugo capped off his career-night with a dunk that ended the game. 

In addition to Ugo's new career-high of 26 points that included 11-of-12 from the field, Sykes II recorded his 13th double-figure game of the season with 16 points that included four three-pointers. WU's Diallo achieved a new-season high of 11 points while shooting a perfect five-of-five from the free-throw line. WU's Luster recorded his first double-double of the season with 10 points while securing a career-high 11 rebounds. Reed rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points as this decision marks his fifth straight game in double-figures.

As a team, the Gorloks outscored the Griffins 20-2 in bench points and scored 19 points on second chance opportunities.  

The Gorloks will continue conference play on Thursday, January 30 visiting Lyon College starting at 7:30PM in Batesville, Arkansas.
