Men’s Basketball Drop Road Battle In Final Moments To Lyon

BATESVILLE, Ark. - The Webster University men's basketball team began a three-game conference road stand visiting Lyon College Thursday evening. The Gorloks battled the Fighting Scots all game but fell in the final moments by the final score of 68-71. Webster moves to 10-8 overall and in a tie for second in the SLIAC standings with a 9-2 conference record.

In the opening minutes of play, Webster and Lyon exchanged baskets to a tie at five apiece that included a layup by Justin Ugo and a three-point basket by Sebastian Reed. Moments later, the Fighting Scots answered with a 8-0 run that was snapped on a free-throw by Karl Moore Jr. that made the score 13-6.

Shortly later, Webster countered with a 5-0 run that included baskets by Moore Jr and Ugo as Alpha Diallo sank a free-throw that cut the deficit down to two at 15-13. Immediately following the run, Lyon increased their lead to 18-13 on consecutive points by Kylon McCullough.

Just under the halfway mark in the first half, WU's Josh Luster started an 11-5 run with a three-point basket. Moments later, Diallo tied the game at 18 apiece with a layup. Two minutes later, Jemard Sykes II and Gabe Mccrary added back-to-back baskets when Moore Jr followed up with a monstrous dunk that gave the Gorloks the lead at 24-23. The Fighting Scots closed out the first half with an 8-4 run that generated the halftime deficit of 31-28.

Webster opened the second half with a 7-2 run that started on a three-point basket by Sykes II. In addition to Sykes II, Ugo knocked down a pair of free-throws when Mccrary added a layup that gave the Gorloks the 35-33 advantage. Moments later, Luster added another three-point basket when Moore Jr. followed up with a layup that kept the Gorloks on top at 40-39.

With the game knotted at 45 apiece, Lyon responded with a 9-3 run that included a three-point basket by Sykes II that generated the 54-48 deficit. Less than 15 seconds later, Sykes II started a 6-3 run with three consecutive free-throws when Diallo cashed in on a three-point basket that cut the deficit down to three at 57-54.

For the next three minutes of action, Webster and Lyon traded baskets when the Fighting Scots increased the deficit to six at 64-58. With just over five minutes left in the game, the Gorloks answered with a 9-1 run that included five points by Ugo and baskets by Mccrary and Diallo that generated a two-point lead at 67-65.

However, the decisive sequence came in the final minute when Lyon's Kennedy Warren split a pair of free throws that cut the lead to one at 67-66. Moments later, Lyon's McCullough converted a fast-break layup with 35 seconds left that gave the Fighting Scots the 68-67 lead. With six seconds remaining on the clock, WU's Luster split a pair of free-throws that made the score 70-68. Immediately following the free-throws by Luster, Lyon's McCullough split a pair of free-throws. On the inbound, Sykes II drove the ball across mid-court and generated a good look but his game-tying three-point attempt rimmed out that unfortunately ended this decision.

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Ugo with 15 points while Sykes II contributed 11 points as the duo secured seven rebounds apiece. In addition, Moore Jr returned to action and recorded 12 points, six rebounds, and four blocks. WU's Diallo rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points while grabbing five rebounds. As a team, Webster outscored Lyon in bench points 22-3 and scored 12 points off turnovers.

The Gorloks will continue conference play with a trip to Mississippi University for Women on Saturday, February 1 starting at 3:00PM in Columbus, Mississippi.
