Four Gorloks Achieved Double-Figures In Heart-Breaking Defeat At MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The Webster University men's basketball team continued conference play with a visit to Mississippi University for Women Saturday afternoon. The Gorloks battled toe-to-toe with the Owls but dropped this contest in the final seconds by the final score of 59-58. Webster moves to 10-9 overall and 9-3 in conference play. 

Webster and MUW opened this decision exchanging baskets to a three-point deficit at 13-10 as six different Gorloks scored a basket. Moments later, the Gorloks countered with a 10-0 run that took the 20-13 advantage. In the run, Josh Luster knocked down a pair of three-point baskets while Jemard Sykes II and Sebastian Reed added layups. Less than a minute later, Webster closed out the first half with a 7-2 that included back-to-back baskets by Reed and a three-point basket by Sykes II that generated the 27-16 halftime lead.  

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Owls answered with a 10-3 run that cut the lead down to four at 30-26. Following a pair of free-throws by Sykes II, Luster knocked down another three-point basket that increased the lead to 35-28. Moments later, the Owls countered with a 9-2 run that tied the game at 37 apiece. On the following Gorlok possession, Webster answered right back with a 5-2 run that included two baskets by Karl Moore Jr. and a free-throw by Reed that took the 42-39 lead. Midway through the second half, the Gorloks increased their lead to eight at 48-40 on back-to-back three-point baskets by Luster and Sykes II. 

Webster and MUW continued this decision with back-and-forth action that pushed the score to 54-46 that included consecutive baskets by Moore Jr as Reed added a jumper. With six minutes to go in regulation, the Owls countered with a 11-2 run over the span of four minutes that generated a one-point deficit at 57-56. With just over a minute left on the clock, Reed gave the Gorloks the 58-57 advantage with a jumper. However, MUW's Eric Bass Jr. netted a layup with four seconds on the clock that unfortunately ended this decision. 

For the game, four Gorloks achieved double-figures led by Reed and Luster with 15 points each as both student-athletes collected seven rebounds. Luster led the team with five three-point baskets. In addition, Sykes II and Moore Jr contributed 12 points apiece. These four student-athletes combined for 54 points while Justin Ugo and Gabe Mccrary added the other four points with a basket each. 

The Gorloks will conclude this three-game conference road stand on Wednesday, February 5 with a visit to Greenville University starting at 7:30PM in Greenville, Illinois.
